So, how well does the series finish? The interesting thing about our hero didn’t really get any play, an unexpected threat shows up, sacrifices are made, the day is saved, and everything works out in the end. All things considered, a fairly generic tale with a couple underutilized points. It could most certainly have been worse, but like so many OVAs, it feels like it would have benefited greatly from having more time/space to flesh the story out. Of course, it probably did get that space in the original game, but like I said previously, I doubt that I’ll ever find out for sure. The anime might yet manage to do a better job of it, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for it on the cheap- though it seems I won’t be getting it locally, Fye’s only seems to have some show called Gun Parade Marcy:

As noted previously, we’re continuing with cautious optimism here. While things start off fairly light, with a hunt for food and then preparation of the inevitably bad cooking when the wrong ingredient is used, but then we spiral rapidly downward with the inevitable character death (hey, it is a war manga, after all), and lots of moping about before the leads suck it up and forge ahead. While the background cast gets the shaft on development, there’s some really nice moments with the female lead and a much more interesting development with the lead male, so points for that.

One more volume to go, hasn’t quite gotten out of middling territory and into the good, but its getting there, could possibly squeak in depending on how the next(and final) volume goes. Looking a bit more at the series as a whole, I didn’t realize it was an adaptation of a PS1 game, which makes me think that the game has a heck of a lot more story and development in it than would ever see the light of day in the manga, or even the anime adaptation. Unfortunately it never came to the US, so I’ll (likely) never know.

Who doesn’t know the story of Ah! My Goddess? Boy has tough life. Boy accidentally dials Goddess Help Line. Boy turns Goddess into eternal companion. Hijinks ensue. One of the classics. Unlike the OVA (which barrels through the initial portion of the plot) and the movie (which takes into account continuity having already been established), the TV show gets the time to explore the stuff found in the manga (of which there is a monstrously huge pile). Having seen the OVA and movie, and read the first 10 volumes or so of the manga, I’d never been particularly pressed to get around to watching the show, but it caught my attention as I was deciding what to watch next, and so I did. As I’ve gotten the bulk of the content in its other forms though, there’s not much to talk about here yet.

We work our way through episodes detailing Keiichi’s life and meeting Belldandy, getting kicked out of the dorms and the search for a new home, divine providence and learning how to fit in, bringing Belldandy to school and competition from the Queen, and Keiichi trying to figure out how to ask Belldandy out (then realizing he doesn’t really need to). I was kind of hoping that they’d get to the motorcycle racing, but the early scene with Keiichi giving chase on a minibike was enough to cushion the blow at the realization of the pacing that the show is actually going at (no Peorth this season ;_;).

The other (slight) disappointment is the drop in animation quality from the OVA/movie to the TV series, but that’s to be expected, really. So far it looks just fine, but I’ll be impressed if they can keep it up throughout. While the next volume should be just as pleasant to watch, I don’t know that I’ll be following this one uninterrupted as its material I’m reasonably familiar with already. More likely it’ll get popped in between other things as I decide what to watch next or as the mood strikes. A visual snack/comfort food, as it were, kind of like randomly tuning in to a beloved and long-running sitcom.

The character designs/artwork that I’ve seen for Gunparade March, and more specifically the anime, have always intrigued me, so, when Big Brain Comics started a huge manga sale a couple weeks ago ($20 for as much manga as you can stuff into a bag, the source of much of my backlog), I jumped at the chance to grab a few volumes and check it out. Let’s see if it was worthwhile…

World War II, 1945, the war ends not with nuclear warheads, but with an invasion, as “Phantom Beasts” arrive in huge numbers to wreak havoc and drive humanity towards extinction. Jump to the turn of the century, after a particularly brutal battle wipes out over 3/4s of the remaining JSDF, the age of conscription is lowered to 14 in order to refill the ranks as quickly as possible, with no more than 6 months of training before shifting to active service. This gives us our excuse for a squad of teenagers, but at least its a fairly reasonable one given the sitation. But then they go and give our stars some new, top of the line, mecha, rather than letting the vets have it, ah well, there goes the grounded logic. To be fair though, they initially train with older models, giving the suggestions that there’s a number of them out there, so it could be normal in this divergent timeline.

However, it looks like its rapidly becoming something of a harem series as well, filled with an improbable number of cute girls of various stereotypes, and the lead female’s emotions running wild whenever the lead male does something with one of the other girls. Still, while the characters themselves are (so far) fairly bland in and of themselves, Sanadura manges to provide some nice interactions between them. Particularly, the moments where they stop working against each other and put the groups interests ahead of their own were really nicely done. Additionally, it was nice to see that by the end of the volume the male and female leads actually figure out they’re interested in each other and make it known, which spawns possibilities down the line.

Art’s nice and crisp, lots of variety to the character design(though I was getting mixed up with the males from time to time, the lead seems to vary in height…), and a promise of nasty military vs monster fighting. The mid-sized mecha are a bit generic, but I like the lines on them, and there’s something about them when they’re that big, a certain something that sparks possibility in their use/application. There’s some potential with the series, kind of hard to tell after one volume, its not great, but its not complete trash either, sitting somewhere in the middle. The best thing I can say about it is that its doing some stuff that brings Valkyria Chronicles to mind, particularly the overall focus of their status as a squad with people covering various roles. Between that and the character interactions, I’m cautiously optimistic about the next volume, will have to see about that.

Hmm. Seems that Sanadura also keeps a blog with a decent amount of sketches mixed in with other postings. Digging through a few pages, it seems to be a worksafe affair, though it seems that he(she?)’s also done some ero-doujins that are somewhat prominently linked to at the top of the site, so there could be some surprises popping up as you dig through the site. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Hmm, idle musings. For the last week or so, there’s been an odd little surge in architectural things that have caught my eye. First the discovery of the LEGO Architecture line (managed to grab the Sears Tower and John Hancock Building models this weekend, by the by!), followed by the much more elaborate models of the guys that designed them, then an article/slideshow pimping a new book showcasing tiny houses which looks quite interesting, and… actually, this one showed up 2-3 weeks back, but I was pointed somehow at the work of Robert Harvey Oshatz (who apprenticed under Frank Lloyd Wright). Add to that some of the stuff that shows up in the Abandoned Places LiveJournal, the Whitechapel photography threads, and other places and it all adds up into a bit of a renewed spark of an old interest in architecture. I’m entirely uneducated on the subject, mind you, but the world of architecture is full of very, very pretty things to look at, and these have been some nice reminders of that.

Let’s see… a D&D-style fantasy with a questionable plot, short runtime, loads of violent women wearing a minimum of clothing, the oh-ho-ho-ho laugh, nonstop ‘funny’ moments (with full gag soundboard), a random musical number, almost zero character development, and the occasional set of tits. Yup, this is a 90s OVA. I’ll be honest, if it was played out as a full 13-26 episode series, it could possibly become at least a guilty pleasure, but as it is, I’m glad I only paid less than $10 for it. That’s really more than needs to be said about it, so consider yourselves warned.

Opening with another short, Rally’s gotten a gig as a firearms instructor at another shooting range and proceeds to school a group of people who have a very Hollywood-based view of handling firearms, explicitly copying Keanu Reeve’s gun-fu in The Matrix and the various antics found in John Woo movies. Of course, this gets her fired as the owners want their customers to waste ammo (and have to spend more), c’est la vie. It was completely extraneous, but there’s still a nice chunk of practical firearms knowledge to be found within, the movie references were amusing, and it was nicely presented.

Starting off a fresh chunk of storyline, Rally goes shopping for a new car, after sacrificing her beloved GT500 in volume 2, and while it isn’t quite what she’s looking for, she quickly comes to appreciate it. Doing so also gives her a new connection that helps get her into an illegal street race where Bean and Percy (the crazy detective from Detroit, in equally crazy disguise) are out for each other’s blood. Mostly it seems to be an excuse for Sonoda to pour out some love for classic muscle cars (and the odd choice of a pimped out Chevy Astro van o_O), but it also gives him an excuse to use Riff Raff (another transporter from the original run) again.

Crazy driving, insane Bean skills, deal making, and another bit of a standoff ensue, leaving things at another stopping point without a cliffhanger. This is good because the next volume isn’t out for months yet and I’d hate to be stuck waiting in the middle of a sequence. So that wraps up Gunsmith Cats: Burst for now, with the fourth volume solicited for mid-September, and the finale sometime after that. Hopefully we can get a new edition of Riding Bean as well, both because I don’t think I’ve ever read it, and because it would be nice to be able to match it up with the style used on Burst and the Omnibuses. It also reminds me that I need to pick up the OVAs, as the Gunsmith Cats one was really good and I never saw the Riding Bean adaptation either.

Just a little night photography, I had a pile of time to kill tonight waiting for the bus, so I thought I’d finally get some proper shots of the stop that I get to wait at every night. Past attempts have failed miserably, but I’m quite pleased with how this one came out. As you can see, its a pretty nice spot, just outside the Securian Center in downtown St. Paul. There’s a few more shots to be had here, and I can’t say that I’m displeased with any of them.
