While not something created directly by Masamune Shirow, I felt that I should include information on the various soundtracks made for Shirow's animated projects. I've only ever seen/heard the various Ghost in the Shell soundtracks, so for the most part, the others are simple track listings I found at Gracenote and YAACC. If you have any of these CDs, or any more information about them, I'd certainly love to know what you know. And yes, before you e-mail me about it, I do know that there is another GitS: SAC OST(called Be Human) availible, I just haven't taken the time to add in the information.
The most recent addition to my music collection, this 1988 album feels like a lighter version of an original Bubblegum Crisis soundtrack, with 80s J-Rock all over the place. According to Gracenote this is both an Image Album to the Manga and some of the background music from the OAV, with Kenji Yamamoto & Norimasa Yamanaka working on it. I still have to watch the OAV again, so I can't really verify that, but I wouldn't doubt it. In the CD is a small foldout insert with some brief character sketches, lyrics to a few tracks, and some other dialogue. Maybe sometime I'll get around to scanning the cd covers and insert for you, but that day is not today.

- Bonus track with Fang Ka Wing
In my ever-ongoing file hunting, I somehow ended up with a second copy of the GitS soundtrack on my computer, and it was on the playlist last night, and all of it seemed familiar except for the last track which was titled as One Minute Warning, but it was a fairly energetic Chinese/Japanese Pop track called See You Everyday, as this didn't seem to fit the rest of the soundtrack I did some more digging on it. From what I can find on Amazon.com's listing of the soundtrack, this appears to be the correct track, and thanks to this site I was able to go and find it on the R1 DVD. It is also credited as such at the end of the movie as See You Everyday with Fang Ka Wing on vocals. The music playing during the credits is listed as One Minute Warning / Passengers(Brian Eno and U2) / vocals by Holi. As I can't seem to find a non-Japanese edition of the soundtrack, this track doesn't appear to have ever made a legitimate soundtrack.
Another Kenji Kawai masterpiece, the Innocence soundtrack feels much like the soundtrack from the first movie, but is still different enough to stand on its own. Two of the tracks are preformed by Kimiko Itoh, a Japanese Jazz vocalist with a gorgeous voice. After hearing her sing Follow Me on one of the Innocence trailers, one of my friends went and ordered her CD and tells me that its more good stuff, I'm still waiting for him to send it along... Anyhow, like I said, this one feels a lot like the first album, so anyone who liked that should keep an eye out for this one.

Availible in two forms, the normal 1-disc version, and a limited 2-disc set, this soundtrack for the Playstation game is 100% techno, and just the kind I like. I recently acquired both versions of the soundtrack, but unfortunately the 2-disc version turned out to be an Ever Anime pirating job, so I'm still looking for a legit version of that, though I doubt I'll ever find it. Abou the only other thing worth noting before I get into track listings is that both versions come with good-sized foldout posters. The 1-disc version has the smaller of the two posters, being about 20" x 15", and contains a large pile of information on the back which seems to give summaries or something of the manga, game, and anime. The limited edition's poster, at least as the Ever Anime version makes it, is about twice as big, at about 30" x 20" and looks like it has all the same info as the other one(plus the track listing for the second disc) on the front side, with nothing on the back.

While I imagine we might get a second soundtrack at one point, for the moment, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex only has one soundtrack availible, with the music composed by Yoko Kanno, who has worked on a variety of well known projects, like Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne, and has an amazing range of talent. Unfortunately I have not been able to find a copy of this CD for my collection, so all the information I have for you is limited to this track listing, which might be a little inaccurate on track lengths. As to how it actually sounds, it is something of a mix of styles, from guitar tracks that could have come from Bubblegum Crisis 2040, to rather somber ambient tracks, to a variety of English and Japanese vocal tracks, and a couple techno/funk tracks thrown in for good measure.

With SAC Season 1 currently airing on regular TV in Japan, they have re-released the soundtrack with 'Plus' tacked on the end of the title, adding TV-Edits of the new openingand ending -
17 - GET9
- by Jillmax
18 - Rise
- by Origa
A new single released in conjunction with the airing of the first season of SAC on non-pay-per-view television to go with the new Opening and Ending themes. Unfortunately GET9 just doesn't have the right feel for SAC at all. Rise is passable, but GET9 just really really doesn't fit.

This doesn't seem to actually qualify for OST status, as it doesn't consist of some of the tracks from the show that should have been on it. Instead a few tracks are from the show and the others are apparently from the Tachikoma-kun shorts that show up on the R2 DVDs. I've only seen about half of the specials and only a few of the tracks sounded familiar. On the whole it is a rather offbeat album, the only track that I really liked was FAX me, it really amuses me. I would have track lengths for you, but nobody seems to post them, and Gracenote is confusing as it lists a 22-track version of the album, which doesn't match anything I can find, mp3s aside.
