While not something created directly by Masamune Shirow, I felt that I should include information on the various soundtracks made for Shirow's animated projects. I've only ever seen/heard the various Ghost in the Shell soundtracks, so for the most part, the others are simple track listings I found at Gracenote, YAACC, and the Yoko Kanno Database. If you have any of these CDs, or any more information about them, I'd certainly love to know what you know. Still getting the needed information on the SAC Game and Techno Tribute soundtracks, but that's another 4 GitS-related soundtracks right there.

This 1988 album feels like a lighter version of an original Bubblegum Crisis soundtrack, with 80s J-Rock all over the place. According to Gracenote this is both an Image Album to the Manga and some of the background music from the OAV, with Kenji Yamamoto & Norimasa Yamanaka working on it. I still have to watch the OAV again, so I can't really verify that, but I wouldn't doubt it. In the CD is a small foldout insert with some brief character sketches, lyrics to a few tracks, and some other dialogue. Maybe sometime I'll get around to posting the cd covers and insert for you, but that day is not today.
Even though it was a relatively new addition to my collection, and quite the rare find, I've since parted with this album, with good reason. In early/mid May, got an e-mail from a guy looking to see about trading this album to him. Let him know that I wasn't really looking to do so, so he looks to seeing about getting a duplicate of it or some such. Before I have the chance to respond to that, which I would have been amenable to, he sends another e-mail flat out offering to buy it off me. For $400. Maybe it'd be different for an album I really loved, but there's no way I was turning this offer down. Everything went down legitimately, and quickly, and I put the money to use with a new 200GB hard drive, the Posterbook sets, and paying some bills. Not a bad return for the $13-14 I spent for it on Ebay.

What to say, what to say... This 2-disc set features a pile of music. The first disc features an energetic set of electronic/pop-punk tracks from the various groups that showed up in the movie, while the second disc collects the music from the movie's score. I happened to like the music in here, but many of the people I've talked to don't like it so... :shrugs: To each their own.

- Each Look At The Sky Is Like The First Look! / See You Everyday - Fang Ka Wing
In my ever-ongoing file hunting, I somehow ended up with a second copy of the GitS soundtrack on my computer, and it was on the playlist last night, and all of it seemed familiar except for the last track which was titled as One Minute Warning, but it was a fairly energetic Chinese/Japanese Pop track called See You Everyday, as this didn't seem to fit the rest of the soundtrack I did some more digging on it. From what I can find on Amazon.com's listing of the soundtrack, this appears to be the correct track, and thanks to this site I was able to go and find it on the R1 DVD. It is also credited as such at the end of the movie as See You Everyday with Fang Ka Wing on vocals. The music playing during the credits is listed as One Minute Warning / Passengers(Brian Eno and U2) / vocals by Holi. As I can't seem to find a non-Japanese edition of the soundtrack, this track doesn't appear to have ever made a legitimate soundtrack.
Another Kenji Kawai masterpiece, the Innocence soundtrack feels much like the soundtrack from the first movie, but is still different enough to stand on its own. Two of the tracks are preformed by Kimiko Itoh, a Japanese Jazz vocalist with a gorgeous voice. After hearing her sing Follow Me on one of the Innocence trailers, one of my friends went and ordered her CD and tells me that its more good stuff, I'm still waiting for him to send it along... Anyhow, like I said, this one feels a lot like the first album, so anyone who liked that should keep an eye out for this one.

Availible in two forms, the normal 1-disc version, and a limited 2-disc set, this soundtrack for the Playstation game is 100% techno, and just the kind I like. I recently acquired both versions of the soundtrack, but unfortunately the 2-disc version turned out to be an Ever Anime pirating job, so I'm still looking for a legit version of that, though I doubt I'll ever find it. Abou the only other thing worth noting before I get into track listings is that both versions come with good-sized foldout posters. The 1-disc version has the smaller of the two posters, being about 20" x 15", and contains a large pile of information on the back which seems to give summaries or something of the manga, game, and anime. The limited edition's poster, at least as the Ever Anime version makes it, is about twice as big, at about 30" x 20" and looks like it has all the same info as the other one(plus the track listing for the second disc) on the front side, with nothing on the back.
Bonus: Check out this limited edition LP version of the soundtrack, found it while digging up cover images here, damn that would be sweet to have.

With the music composed by Yoko Kanno, who has worked on a variety of well known projects, like Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne, Ghost in the Shell SAC has some major talent backing it. Unfortunately I have not been able to find a copy of this CD for my collection, so all the information I have for you is limited to this track listing, which might be a little inaccurate on track lengths. As to how it actually sounds, it is something of a mix of styles, from guitar tracks that could have come from Bubblegum Crisis 2040, to rather somber ambient tracks, to a variety of English and Japanese vocal tracks, and a couple techno/funk tracks thrown in for good measure.

At the end of the first season's run, this soundtrack was rerelased as OST+, adding the two new opening numbers for the show, the first being used on the broadcast TV re-airing of SAC season 1, and the second is used at the start of 2nd GIG.

Also, need to make note of something that's come up with the US release of the SAC special edition. Well, two things really. First off, there seems to be audio dropouts on the DTS track, specifically on the Japanese side. Second, and more stupefying is a serious botching on apparently all of the SAC OST+ that shipped with it. The track count is right, and the music's all there, but tracks 8(Velveteen) and 9(Lithium Flower) got combined into one, and track 12(silent fish ~ cruise) gets split 2:14 into the track. Bandai's supposedly been investigating the DTS issues, but there's been nothing said at all about the OST. At this point, if you were planning on getting the special edition, I have to caution you against if because of these, either go for the regular version or be sure to take advantage of the recall and replacement(see Anime on DVD's glitch disc section).
Containing primarily tracks from SAC 2nd GIG, with 1-2 from the first season sneaking on here(including GET9 again :/). Not having listened to it much, I can't really comment on it, aside from saying it's a mix of stuff done by Yoko Kanno again.

Released towards the end of July 2005, this is possibly the last of the SAC soundtracks, though there is quite possibly enough music still not present on any of the OSTs to compile a fourth soundtrack, so keep you fingers crossed. Containing mostly pieces from 2nd GIG, this soundtrack leans towards electric guitar mixes, along with a variety of other stuff. Seems to me that Yoko's influences for this one included some Bubblegum Crisis 2040 and U2, but that could just be me. Of note here is Christmas in the Silent Forest, which serves as the new OP track for the general broadcast airing of 2nd GIG, much like GET9 did for Season 1 of SAC.

A new single released in conjunction with the airing of the first season of SAC on broadcast TV and the start of 2nd GIG to go with the new Opening themes for each. Unfortunately GET9 just doesn't have the right feel for SAC at all. Rise is quite alright, but GET9 just really really doesn't fit.

This doesn't seem to actually qualify for OST status, as it doesn't consist of some of the tracks from the show that should have been on it. Instead a few tracks are from the show and the others are apparently from the Tachikoma-kun shorts that show up on the R2 DVDs. I've only seen about half of the specials and only a few of the tracks sounded familiar. On the whole it is a rather offbeat album, the only track that I really liked was FAX me, it really amuses me.
