Of all Shirow's works that have been translated ito an anime, this 4-part OAV does about the best job of retaining the look, humor, and(to a lesser degree) story of the original manga. Set in the near future where crime and air pollution run rampant, things have gotten so bad that the Police Chief feels that even the tanks they are equipped with are inadequate to stamping out crime. As one reviewer put it, this is pretty much the Police Academy of anime, certainly worth watching when you're in the mood for some laughs.
We have quite the collection of certifiably insane cast members here, from the murderous Squad Leader Britain, to the raging Chief of Police, to the Puma Twins, android catgirls with half a brain between them, then there's the other members of the Tank Police itself, all of whom enjoy the wanton destruction they are a part of. For more on the characters themselves, head over to the Characters page, as I didn't feel like writing them up each time. What's that? You want spoilers? Well fine, here you go, enjoy.
Welcome to the year 2010 A.D. - It's a nice place to visit, but you definitely wouldn't want to live here! The world is covered by a poisonous, bacterial cloud, and vicious gangs control the cities. A violent crime is committed every 36 seconds. What's a poor, defenseless citizen supposed to do? Desperate times call for desperate measures...
Enter the Tank Police, led by tough-guy "Mr. Squad Commander" Britain(lifetime subscriber to How to Kill Magazine). Together, the elite squad of lunatics- along with new recruit Leona- is taking back the streets by excessive force and putting the "terror" back into "interrogation!"
