Makoto Mizuhara:


Ifurita's love, and El-Hazard's hero, Makoto is your all-star super student, excelling at everything from schoolwork to art to sports, yep... this one was born under a lucky sign. And if you ask Jinnai, he'll tell you that Makoto's doing it all to bring ruin to Jinnai's desires, right down to getting the last sandwich at lunch. He even has something of a crush on Jinnai's sister, Nanami.

When our tale begins, an earthquake has shaken the foundation of the school and revealed ruins beneath the basement which were found, of course, by Makoto. At this time, Mokoto is getting ready to testify against Jinnai for buying votes in the Student President election, even though he naively considers Jinnai his friend(he's just a wee bit dense, Tenchi Syndrome, as it were).

Before Makoto can testify, Jinnai lures him into a trap, intending to tie him up and prevent the testimony, as to preserve his Presidency. But while Jinnai is chasing Makoto, a strange stillness comes over everything and Makoto is drawn to the ruins where a beautiful woman, Ifurita, sends him, along with Jinnai, Nanami, and Mr. Fujisawa, one of their teachers, off to El-Hazard.

Almost immediately upon arriving, he and Fujisawa rescue a princess(Rune Venus). Shortly afterwards, Makoto gets asked to impersonate Rune's younger sister Fatora, who has been mysteriously kidnapped, since he is her spitting image. Now if you know anything about El-Hazard, you probably know that all the Earthlings who got transported there gained some special ability and you're probably thinking Makoto got the short straw, looking like a princess, oh wow, wonderful.

If that's what you thought, you'd be wrong. Later on, with the aid of Dr. Schtalubaugh, it is revealed that his real power lies in interfacing and empowering the ancient relics of El-Hazard, everything from little discs to robotic sentries to Demon Gods... anything from the old days. And it is with this power that he eventually captures Ifurita's heart and frees her from her bonds.
